Nei Lopes is one of the greatest samba composers of the last 40 years. In conjunction with his former partner, Wilson Moreira, he’s written a series of true classic sambas. This one waxes nostalgic about times long past, during the period when the legendary soccer player Dondon was establishing his mythic career. Toward the end, he is joined onstage by his partners in this day’s presentation, Eduardo Gallotti and João Martins, and they end with some friendly improvised song sparring called “partido alto”. Nei is also a knowledgeable scholar, with several books to his credit. His subjects include samba, afro-brasilian culture in general, and other social commentaries. He is an extremely well-informed fellow, and very affable!
